Deadmau5 criticises festivals and says EDM is dying
Toronto DJ Deadmau5 has launched a scathing attack on music festivals, claiming that they are “being branded bigger than the acts”.
Deadmau5, real name Joel Zimmerman, has never been shy to express his feelings, and in an interview with The Evening Standard he explains his irritation towards major festivals, revealing that he won’t be playing them anymore.
He said: âItâs another thing I canât f*****â stand, you know? Festivals are being branded bigger than the acts, which is totally backwards in my head. Itâs âcause of those acts that youâre a festival! Who wins? The promoter. The guy whoâs throwing this festival thatâs branded bigger than you, that you think youâre awesome for headlining. Itâs a shame, so thatâs why Iâm pulling out.â
The man in the mask also spoke about his belief that EDM is on the way out.
“As they say, the rat is the first one to jump off the boat when it starts going down, and thatâs kind of whatâs happening. Itâs already been going down the last couple of years, for me. Maybe not in the industry. Maybe thereâll be a whole new herd of sheep following that shit, and f****** good luck.
âDisco had a longer run than EDM has, to be honest about it, and that died in a f****** hurry. EDM is way more susceptible because that was in a time when they didnât have mass social media and all that shit. Itâs not gonna be me saying, âOK, EDMâs doneâ, and the whole thing falls apart, but I think itâll eventually f*** itself so hard.â
